It's been 50-years since Indonesia’s invasion of Timor-Leste. The invasion came just days after Timor-Leste declared independence following the departure of its long-time colonial master Portugal. It’s estimated more than 100-thousand Timorese died in the next few years along from conflict and famine. More died in the two decades of brutal occupation that followed. Despite the passage of time, the memories of those dark days remain fresh in the minds of survivors. Vonia Viera with this report. |

It also marked a turning point in one of the darkest chapters in Timor’s history that led to Indonesia’s invasion and two decades of violence that killed over 100,000 Timorese.
